Gender Equality in Public and Political Life

"Societies in the MONA region exhibit a high degree of social inequality and gender injustice. Neoliberal structural adjustment programs further exacerbate these issues and increase the burden of unpaid care work performed by women. Violent conflicts, the securitization of states, as well as the climate crisis and environmental degradation, deepen the marginalization and disadvantage of women. Women are largely excluded from political decision-making processes. Feminist perspectives that criticize the structural causes of overlapping crises are either absent from national and regional discourses on societal challenges or are not accepted. The Friedrich Ebert Foundation (FES) sees it as a central task to make feminist analyses, perspectives, and demands—especially in Arabic—accessible to a broad public by providing platforms. Through the development of publications and (digital) campaigns, FES aims to influence public discourse, raise awareness about the discrimination of women and other marginalized groups, and increase visibility for feminist concepts."

Recognition for Marginalized Groups

"Discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender, or gender identity can be attributed to both legal and societal factors. Adapting the legal framework—by abolishing discriminatory provisions in areas such as family, labor, and social security law—and establishing more effective mechanisms to protect individual rights can only be successfully implemented if supported by society."

"Other marginalized groups—including migrants and domestic workers—require support to ensure they can live and work under conditions that respect their dignity and rights."
