Oil and Gas regional trade union networks discussing workers’ rights

On a multinational scale, violation of trade union rights is the highest in the MENA region. How to protect the workers and ensure better labor conditions was the core of this network’s discussions

Representatives from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) oil and gas unions met for the fifth time in Beirut, as part of a network supported by the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung.

Delegates from Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia along with guests from Norway attended this event.

Several important issues related to the workers in the oil and gas sector were addressed including safety and health.

The sector also faces a major contradiction. There should be a balance between meeting the energy needs of a growing population and taking climate change preventive measures. It is important to ensure that it is not the workers who will suffer the consequences of this contradiction.
